Understanding Through Opposition

Somethings in this place are only understood in opposition,
Some people say that contra is an important part of comprehension.
Go and try to describe the light without the dark,
Right without the wrong,
Panties without a thong.

You show me this documentary where you are literally a star,
I’m watching and brought to tears, learning more of who you are.
Feeling your tears come, I look at you and my heart starts to melt.
Because in my soul I know that you feel exactly what she felt.

An elder from Alabama was interviewed just after you,
She came on and told us a bunch of things we thought we knew,
She was at the marches that were violently torn up by the whites,
In Montgomery, while our people fought them for our rights.

At that time, the woman who we watched was just a child,
Poor baby experienced some aspects of America the most wild.
She spoke so sincerely, so sadly, and so confidently said,
“That THAT was the exact moment when my religion was dead,
Why Jesus why…
Would you do this to me and our people?”
Some things we will never know,
Some glass we will never see through.

I hear this story (might sound strange) and I can’t help but smile,
This woman’s words bring me to more clarity than I’ve had in a while,
The feelings from her story are exactly contra from you and me,
Your love has shown me what she lost, fresh in reality.

The depth of love you bring to my life can genuinely be described as,
The opposite of losing one’s religion and one’s innocence.
